The Gambler and The Rabbi - A message??

Here is the well known song by Kenny Rogers
and the yiddish version - read it carefully until the end....when I ask...

THE GAMBLER

On a warm summer’s evenin’ on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin’, out the window at the darkness
’til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, son, I’ve made a life out of readin’ people’s faces,
And knowin’ what their cards were , by the way they held their eyes.
So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey, I’ll give you some advice.

So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette, and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, if you’re gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away, and know when to run.
You never count your money, when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’, when the dealin’s done.

Now ev’ry gambler knows, that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away, and knowing what to keep.
cause ev’ry hand’s a winner, and ev’ry hand’s a loser,
And the best that you can hope for, is to die in your sleep.

So when he’d finished speakin’, he turned back towards the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness , the gambler, he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away, and know when to run.
You never count your money, when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin, ’ when the dealin’s done.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count you r money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.

THE RABBI

On a warm summer's evening
On a ride to Monticello
I sat next to a rabbi
We were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns staring
Out the window to the darkness
Till boredom overtook us
And he began to speak

He said,

"Yoh, ich bin an alter - Un s'tit mir vei di beiner,
Un Chotsh di burd iz lang un grois,
ich hob a sach gezen ,
Gib aher a bissel bronfin,
Vel ich zugen gitte eitzes
Veil ich zay in deine pleitzes , Vos iz bei dir geshen. ....

"So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he mooched a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression..

He said,

"Ich gei dir yetzt zugin Dem yisod fun yidishkeit.

"M'darf vissen ven tsu koifen, Vissen ven tsu loifen ,
Vissen ven tsu dreien git, Un ven tsu handlen fein,
Besser red nisht vus m'darf nisht, Un gei nisht vi e m'tur nisht ,
Yo, s'iz git tsi furen, besser iz tsi bleiben in der heim.

"Yeder Chochem veist , Az a yid miz zein b'simcha ,
Danken borey oilam, Far alles vos men hut .
Inn halt di torah teier ; Veil dortin brent a feier!
Un gib a sach tzedukeh , Veil parnuseh kimt fin Got.

"And when he finished speaking
He turned back to the window
Said Borey Nefoshos ,
And faded off to sleep .
And somewhere in the darkness,
My soul, it started burning,
For in his final words ,
I found A strength that I could keep.

M'darf vissn ven tsu koifen - Vissn ven tsu loifen,
Vissn ven tsu dreien git , Un ven tsu handlen fein .
Besser red nisht vus m'darf nisht - Un gei nisht vie m'tur nisht,
Yo, s'iz git tsi furen, besser iz tsi bleibin in der heim.

I see a deeper meaning here ... do you?? What is your impression of this song?

What do you think it means for the average person?

What lesson is it trying to teach us?

Sounds like "Eliyohu Hanovi" came down to give us the message - what is life all about, how to go about living in this world........very good, and something to think about.
Thanks for always coming up with something different and thought provoking!

Did you write the lyrics yourself? I always loved Kenny Rogers. Where did you gain such a varied repetoire of pop music growing up in Williamsburg?

As for the message. I see it as this. One of the most important things you can learn in life is to know the difference between right and wrong. If you have this snsitivity then you know "when to Buy and when to run", You know how to deal with situations when you are away from home. You can rely on yourself to make the right decision. Deal with the hand you've been dealt.

The yiddish lyrics are from Country Yossi in his spoof of the Kenny Rogers song. I just think it's such a strong message! Some people think it's just funny, but I see it as something very very true. Just as you said. You have to know when to go with it, when to run away from certain situations, you have to realize that although it's fun to go outside the realm of the frum world, it's much better to stay at home - in your yiddishkeit.

Well said MG. This is one point that I hope my children learn well. They see a lot of their friends, classmates, and neighbors getting into things they shouldn't. Knowing boundaries is very important, recognizing which lines not to cross is a gift from G-d. I pray for all those impressionable teens out there to ride out the storm without getting washed away by the current. It's a big bad world out there and too many of them are being swept away.

Kenny Rogers has some of the best lyrics, the message to me is the same as the message from Coward of the county, there is a time for everything, you just have to know what to do when. Country Yossis nebach of the shteibel was also good, cuz it was in English! As far as this country yossi song, we're still waiting for a translation...

At 11:39 AM, Blogger Margaritagirrl said...

to KVETCH...
some of the lines from Captain Jack.
Saturday night and you're still hangin' around
You're tired of livin' in your one horse town
You'd like to find a little hole in the ground
For a while...
Captain Jack will get you high tonight.....
So you decide to take a holiday...
You got your tape deck and your brand new Chevrolet...
Ah but there's no place to go ...anyway...
And what for...
You've got everything, but nothing's cool.....
So you play your albums and you smoke your pot....
And you meet your girlfriend in the parking lot
Oh, but still you're aching for the things you have not got
What went wrong...
And if you can't understand why your world is so dead
And why you've got to keep in style and feed your head
I DON'T KNOW KVETCH - I MEAN I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE TRYING TO SAY WITH THIS, BUT I CAN'T SEE THAT IT'S WHAT I'M HEARING IN THE KENNY ROGERS SONG, (or Country Y)

The massage my dear sunrise is LIFE, the way we should see that how ever good a given path is; we should still not fallow it blindly, and some times we have to use our own mind in knowing when to fold. BTW I like and think that the massage from the gambler is a way more sincere and unagendarised then the one from the rabbi.

At 10:39 PM, Blogger Margaritagirrl said...

to lost spirit...
You know, you have a point there.
The Gambler's advice is a general guideline to a moral and ethical life, and of course the Rabbi's is geared towards being a good jew...but - the overall concept is the same, isn't it?

At 1:33 AM, Blogger stillruleall said...

Thanks for the translation...I've listened to Country yossi for years and never understood half his songs...I dont think he has a straight message, just a lot of different points.
KNOW WHEN TO TWIST THINGS AROUND,
AND WHEN TO DEAL JUST RIGHT,
sometimes the truth isnt what really happened, if telling the truth will hurt someone then twisting it around becomes the truth.
YES, IT'S GOOD TO TRAVEL,
BETTER YET TO STAY AT HOME.
It's good to see the world, to learn from it, but better not to be exposed to whats out there.

At 5:19 AM, Blogger LostSpirit said...

True, although what is called being a “good Jew” is very subjective. I guess the point I was trying to make is that the gambler is telling us what it is to be moral and ethical, where as the rabbi is also putting in “his” opinion how to get there.
(Just noticed I called you “sunrise” I wrote that comment last night after having 5 margaritas!!! Just in case you where thinking of asking; no my hangover is not too bad!! Just still feel a bit floaty)

All fine had plenty to eat and water so I guess that did it for me. As Monday is in the UK a bank holiday; I went off with some friend for a boy’s brake, and yes drinking to much is all part of the package!!! But I can assure you girl that it takes more then 5 to make me get my drinks mixed up, I just used it as both are made of Tequila.

True - both drinks are tequila based. You know your booze - I like that!
Around here, in my neighborhood, the women don't drink....if anything, they might have a pina colada or a white russian. The men generally drink scotch.....yawn, yawn.
Ever have a "Long Island Iced Tea?" It seems so harmless, and then --- it sets you flying! (assuming, of course, that you have a few of them)

At 11:56 PM, Blogger LostSpirit said...

I mostly like shooters. When I want a fast trip with out risking too much of a hangover I go for a nice 100% gold tequila or old fashioned vodka. If I am in a bit more of an exotic mood I go for B52’s or caffeine shots, and girl what a trip that takes you on.

It’s made of Kahlua and Bailey's Irish Cream(cholev akim) and in some places they use Cointreau or in Europe they some times use some other stuff I can not remember the name(its illegal in the USA). I like it most when they set it on fire and then you stick your straw in and drink it before the straw burns. It’s awesome and you also get to inhale the fumes so it hits you real fast!!!
It’s sure a nice one to try, just make sure we are not in the same city at the time!!!!
Just wandering how a blog about morality got off to this topic) (-:

MG, Long Islands are definitely my drink of choice, tasty and do the job well. Strongest thing I've had was a flaming Lambourghini(?), like a B52, they lit it and give you two straws, while your drinking it they pour more stuff in. Definitely hits the spot.

So what do you think of my new guy ...notstam..could you just die laughing?? Why is he continuing to post on my blog? Not enough that he insulted me, my morals, my ethical behaviour, my choosing to get divorced, and just about everything..........now he comes back, and back, and back.. I don't like to be bitchy, and normally I try to understand everybody in their own way, but what is the story here??
